Under 17's League Table :D

Next Saturday is the 21st June - well past exam time. I trust we will see a lot more available people now. Otherwise the 5th XI will be withdrawn from the league.

Most of the guys have exams...especially the Year 11 lot as they finish mid June. I haven't played much cricket during these holidays as I been stuck with the same problem, only played a game if I have no exams early part of the following week. I'll ask some of the others if they are intrested.

selection process ?

Also it helps if players only cry off for genuine reasons.Please believe me that all the captains put a lot of work into running their sides.This is apart from what people see on the day of play.Organising a side to travel to distant grounds in the TVCL and turn up on time, takes time and planning and can be stressful and those who let down that process are hindering the success of that side.Whilst i'm sure all the captains use performance as the main criteria,other factors such as reliability and (as steve says) whether they are serial non or slow payers of subs, also comes into play.

RESULTS

League results are posted on the TVL League website (www.tvlcricket.com), usually by about midnight Saturday so you can see the results there first. I'm sure the people posting the scores on our website have other things to do on Sat and Sun nights so I think that having them updated by Tuesdays the following week would be more than acceptable considering the length of time it takes for them to be entered.

I would be happy to do this for the Sat 1st XI on a weekly basis. It does take a fair amount of time (approx. 30mins) but is something that needs to be done. It might be a bit trickier for the lower teams that have a higher turnover of players as the person submitting the score obviously needs to take the scorebook home and will need to be playing in the same team the following Saturday.

Something for the Captains to discuss I think.

I would hope that the playing for another club would affect selection in any way seeing as I have already played for 4 different clubs this season! I make that decision on the basis that I want to play with different people, different grounds and different formats of the game and that it helps me perform better.

Jay if you look carefully you'll notice the stats show you to have played in two games. you've scored 59* in the game you played for the sunday tigers and 0 in the game against chelfont st. peters last sunday.

Only two of the games you've played in have the scorecards updated for the site. You are failing to understand that someone actually has to input these scorecards on the website. This is quite a lengthy process by nature. Since you'r so keen i think we can discuss this further this weekend. The ones do need someone from the team to volunteer to do this every week.

From my recollection of being on the selection committee a few years ago paying your subs and match fees also usually helps your case in getting selected.

ur 100% correct there, new members looking on the site will only find negative stories, ultimately (if the were thinking about joining the club) turning else were for a game because they can see all the POLITICS within club walls........But to be fair it has been worked on and the fact that we can get our message across is good, however to some extent none playing members may also want to put their opinions through...so there is an arguments for both sides

Hi i would just like to point out that the score that are updated under statistics are never really accurate.

i mean till date i have scored 68,44,59*,28,0 and all i have on the stats is 0.

dunno how it sounds but i think its quite unacceptable, somebody needs to be updating it properly.

would like some feed back on this.

These forums we have on the website;

Firstly, they are good and I do think that this is developing our website and our club; it allows members in the club to communicate which is important. However, I think these forums should ONLY be available to members of this club and not to the public. Its good to see some issues are being raised and the quicker they are raised and sorted out the sooner C&L can progress, but allowing outsiders, or potential members who are looking to join this club - to see these issues this club is having is going to stop them joining. Considering we NEED colts; after seeing this I do not think parents would be likely to send their son to this club.

I think if the admins could rectify it so only members of the club can see the forums.

MADE TO FEEL WELCOME

Heard from AJ UNALKAT at 11 o clock 1 hour prior to setting off on sunday morning that i was not allowed to play, as another member from the club complained that they were not getting a fair chance of play as i never put my self down as available in the books, hence them having priority of play over me. However i'm still unsure this was the main reason, as a few members of the club have pointed out that i have started playing for two clubs!

Heres my answer two that particular person making sly gestures to AJ and people asking why im playing for two clubs

1) Firstly, Me not putting my self down for selection the week before? well the answer is that i was mugged two weeks back and put in hospital, and had only felt i fully recovered on the wednesday and then wanting a game on wednesday night calling AJ for a game, who quite happily welcomed me to play for him.......

2) secondly the question of me playing for a new club on a sat? Well i was made to feel 'very unwelcome' a few weeks back at a net at whitton by the 2nd team captain, who obviously did not think his comments would have had such an affect on me. I also believe he did not use the pre season games to the best use i.e giving 'other key bowlers' a justly derserved spell of bowling. However that to me is not the real issue as he is a young captain and is still learning the game, i just hope for himself and the others playing around him that he sees this thread as a positive and can learn from this incident. My real problem is being told that 'i needed to get my act together in order to play on his team' in a very intimidating manner, when never once on the pitch while i was playing by his side i did not give 100% for him and my team members???

3)Thirdly me playing for two different clubs, firstly if u feel u can now longer work with ur captain then u cant play cricket, im not a professional and play cricket on my own schedule with the hope of having some fun. Also i do remember a number of players playing for two DIFFERENT CLUBS for a number of seasons, so why should i be banned on that point, surely that is unfair on my behalf????

Am I alone here??? or does anyone else neglect me playing on sundays?? My saturdays at the moment or sceptical but i pray i will be able to come back on the pitch for C&L and preform the way we all should

hi regarding selection process

just would liek to know how the selections work ? how do we get to play for the higher teams such as the sat 2nd eleven and saturday 3rds ? as ive noticed certain players wernt picked last season on there performance basis's and theres plenty of young guys who r talented and have the potential to get better by playing better cricket,

as im aware and what i have noticed is over the past few years that players are not picked because of the performance its like they have a set team........ !!! and the players who r chosen week in week out are not peforming and yet they r still selected,,,,,

I THINK TO PLAY CRICKET IN THE SATURDAY TEAM ABOVE 4S U DONT HAVE TO PERFORM JUS GO OUT FOR A FEW DRINKS GET HAMMERED AND JUS AV A CURRY WITH THE SKIPPER PERHAPS AND MAYBE U MIGHT GET A GAME .....

LEAGUE SEASON SPECIAL

After months of training, or thinking about training, a few practice games and much talk in various public houses it is time for the centrepiece of the clubs season to begin: the league. For some of our teams this will involve a gruelling slog over 18 weeks, whilst others face fewer games but in quick bursts, which will require an equal amount of concentration.

As a consequence this months edition of the ChiLatty focuses on the league. In addition to a team-by-team league preview Simon Barnes remembers our first league title and for those new to the club a basic run down on how the TVL works is included. As well as some of the columns featured last month some new ones also appear. One new feature is the ‘Shots of the Month’ section feturing some photo’s from a recent game. This does make the document quite large to send electronically; as a consequence an edition without these photos will also be available. For those who are unable to access either of these copies I will make some hard copies available at Whitton and Chiswick House.

May is also the time of the year our treasurer, Andy Rauf, is at his busiest collecting subs. Not surprisingly this can be easier from some members than others. Some are budding Alan Sugars’ and are very fiscally aware; particulary of their own finances, whilst others believe in a more Marxist approach to subs collection (i.e. wealth should be distributed, but not from them). The club does not make great sums of money each year (last year we made a loss!). Subs and match fees account for the vast majority of our income: if we do not receive this not only can we not do the basic stuff (e.g. pay for the ground) but more importantly we cannot develop the club by investing in new stuff (e.g sightscreens, nets etc.). In summary if you don’t pay subs or match fees you are, in effect, depriving yourself of a good place to play cricket in the long run.

Moving back from a grumble to the main topic: the start of the league season. This time of year is always one of great optimism throughout the UK cricket world. At the moment we have a lot to look forward to; we can forget past successes and failures - this year will be our year? Lets hope so. None of our teams can rule themselves out of promotion or winning the league. My prediction is for the Sat 3’s and Sun 1’s to be the favourite to pick up some silverware but hopefully many of our other sides will prove me wrong.

LEAGUE PREVIEW – TEAM BY TEAM

Sat 1’s – Division 2A

Over the years we have become one of the more consistent sides in this division. Datchet and Marlow will undoubtedly be strong, whilst Burnham 2’s can be very good but seem to struggle with consistency. Farnham Royal 2’s just sneaked into the division and will probably be propping it up, whilst some considered Beaconsfield lucky to stay up last season.

ChiLatty prediction: a solid season finishing around 4^th place.

Sat 2’s – Division 4b

Relegation last season should make the 2’s a front-runner for promotion; on the other hand the expansion of the league has introduced some potentially very strong sides to this division. An obvious example is Yateley who we know are a strong club. The two other newcomers (Purley on Thames and Sonning) are an unknown quantity. Odiham & Greywell came down with us and we know we often have competitive games with whilst Caversham & Red. and Maidenhead & Bray (this is probably the division with the longest names in the league) were both performed well in this division last year. Chesham only just qualified for this division and could only win batting second last year whilst Barnes Wild Geese are essentially a 4^th team. Expect these two to struggle.

ChiLatty Prediction: It is very open and consistency will be the key. 5^th place for C+L

Sat 3’s – Division 6b

The 3’s face the same newcomers as the twos (Yateley 2’s, Farnham Common 2’s and Sonning 2’s). It is likely that one of these will be strong enough to mount a challenge to the 3’s attempt to win the title (although Farnham Common 2’s should be competitive). The remainder of the division contains sides the 3’s were able to comfortably beat last season when they got into their stride. Expect Burnham 3’s, Fleet 2’s and Hampton Hill 2’s to prop up the table.

ChiLatty prediction: As long as the rain holds off at Chiswick House a C+L league title.

Sat 4’s – Division 7b

A division created from a lot of sides who played in different parts of the league last year. The key to success at this level is try and keep a fairly consistent team together; this can often help a team squeeze over the finishing line in tight games in the second half of the season (unless the team is rubbish that is!!). Look out for Windsor 3’s to be title favourites; although Harefield 3’s and promoted Chesham 3’s (won 13 out of 14 last year) could also contend. Wycombe Dragons 2’s will struggle to adjust to league cricket.

ChiLatty Prediction: Being a 4^th team consistency in player availability can be an issue – probably a 5^th or 6^th place.

Sat 5’s - Division 9a

Not having a captain currently does place the 5’s in a weak position. In years gone by though when we have managed to put a regular side out we have more than competed in this division. This year there are a number of new sides into the division who may take time to adjust. Fleet 3’s are probably pre-season favourites. Chalfont St Peter 3’s may be the team to watch of the new boys.

ChiLatty Prediction: with a captain then a mid to upper table position; without one???

Sun 1’s – Old Boys League

Over the years we have finished in almost every position in this league (including bottom once and winning it twice). With a 1^st teamer in Sunni now in charge we should be putting out stronger teams and will hopefully challenge. Some of the old forces in this competition are not as strong as they used to be, but two new sides to the league, Chessington and Kempton, will be enthusiastic, but watch out for Wimbledonians and Emanuel as wild cards. Sinjuns and Old Tiffs are likely to prop the division up.

ChiLatty prediction: Hopefully the title but perhaps Chessington will be too strong; 2^nd place for C+L

The Tigers – Thameside League Div 2

Last year (our first in the competition) we finished 3^rd out of 4 with Worcester Park running out as clear winners. Expect Worcester Park to dominate again with new entrants British Airways to also be very strong. ByFleet are likely to pick up the wooden spoon again. This year the league has expanded to 6 with the other clubs being Chessington and Ashford.

ChiLatty Prediction: a creditable 4^th for the young Tigers in 2008

The Bulls are not in a league this year; they are playing for fun!!!

Other Competitions - OBSL Cup

To be held on Bank Holiday Mondays. Our first round tie is at home against Cup Holders Old Mid-Whitgiftian. The ChiLatty does not expect them to travel well on a BH Mon so this is an ideal opportunity to progress through to the Semi-Final. If we do then we will meet either Old Tiffs or Sinjuns Grammarians away; both teams are likely to be near the foot of the table in the league so hopefully a cup final date awaits.

OUR FIRST LEAGUE TITLE

Hopefully 2008 will bring plenty of trophies for the club. Our first league title came in 2001 (only our second season as a merged club) when the Satudray 3’s won their league. The captain that year, Simon Barnes, remembers the season….

2001 3rd XI

Despite what some CLCC members may think I do not have all the stats to hand for the first CLCC Saturday team triumph of the merged club. So when the editor asked me to regale you all of those balmy days I put my memory into action and certain things came to mind! Apologies if some of you around at the time don’t remember it the same way,but you know what they say...’don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story’!

Firstly, the joy that I wouldn’t have to face the 4th x1 in a league match, as in 2000’s ‘Battle of Chiswick House’. Some of you may express surprise that our editor was the Ricky Pontingesq skipper of the 4’s in those days, without Pontings average of course!

Secondly, that wonderful game at Watneys where we beat Barnes (for the 1st and last time) by a handful of runs. The momentum of the season really got going after that game, as a betting man we would have only been 3rd or 4th fav’s at the start of the season. If you think there are characters around today, well they were around in 2001! Try Peter Moss, driving 2 hours to play, then getting an early LBW, by Richard Windmill (who always seemed worried by turning down the oppo’s appeal!) as the bowler was about to bowl the next ball.. 30 odd for 5 and a nervous breakdown! Somehow we made 200 on an iffy track and bowled Barnes out for 190, with their best, but temperamental, batsman retired hurt with a slight twinge, that their skipper was still trying to resolve as we were cracking the bubbly open in the changing rooms! This was when Nick Flook played his first game of the season and averaged around 80 I think, took loads of vital catches and wickets- many thanks to the 2nd x1 skipper that year!!

Thirdly, we won crucial games when we were up against it. There were cameo’s from people like Rowan Bamford and Andy Mills taking 8 wickets in respective games at Thatcham Town and Marlow Park, but I haven’t seen them since! Underpinning this though was a great team spirit (with a few fallings out in this competitive arena!), especially as the momentum gathered with results.

Fourthly, Derek Hill, who has to have his own bullet point! Or as I remember it at Falkland, where we won by 1 run, I didn’t have a bullet, so throw the cricket ball at him as I took the final catch! I think we made up in the showers didn’t we Derek (..not in that way Stocksy!) Talking about ructions, Anthony Salmon - where is he now?! Answers on a postcard, but my lawyers have told me to say he wasn’t advising Northern Rock this time last year. I was always too pre-occupied in rounding up the troops on time at Chiswick Station to remember not to be left driving Anthony to Falkland or Basingstoke etc. If you are reading this ‘AS’ you still owe your subs!

Other random memories include batting John Wrigglesworth at number 10 v.NPL. How was he in the 4’s so long! Matti Watton persuading me to try and opening with him (instead of his 8 or 9 berth) and repaying me with 50’s in his next few innings! Gaining myself a ‘Rambo’ nickname after the pressure started to tell at Stoke Green! Player of the season Mick Kerr taking a hatfull of wickets with his gentle away swing (it doesn’t work for me!) Finally that balmy, Champion winning, Chiswick House day v. Marlow Park on the 8th Sept,2001. I remember speaking to Phil Cambray a couple of days later saying what a great place the world felt ....!

CHILATTY DRINKS COLUMN

I was at the International Wine Challenge judging the other week (tough job but someone’s got to do it) when I saw Oz Clarke, a man partial to a few glasses of wine in his time. So I asked him if he had any recommendations for wines for cricketers to improve performance.

After looking at me with a face that suggested I had just served a case of ’68 Chateau Lafitte at the OBSL lunch, he replied “ Cricketers don’t drink wine., They’re beer swilling louts with the palette of Jodie Marsh!” “Actually Mr C” I replied “ I beg to differ”. “ Prove it” he challenged. “ OK, Mr C, here goes….”

Former England captain David Gower commented that ‘when you’re travelling with cricket, you’re travelling to wine producing regions’. Many former and current England players list wine tasting as one of their favourite hobbies. Graham Gooch’s cellar is currently 500 bottles, Gower’s numbers approximately 800 and Ian Botham has gone as far as to become part owner of a winery in McLaren Vale, Australia producing commercial quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

Botham’s preference is for full-bodied, oaky reds but Nasser Hussain enjoys fresh, zingy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Kapil Dev and Madan Lal enjoy lighter reds such as pinot noirs and tempranillo. Former England cricket captain Bob Willis has a passion for Spanish and Australian wines and reputably drinks them whilst commentating, especially when working with Ian Botham.

It would seem then that cricketers have a penchant for quality reds and New World whites, and enjoy nothing better than discussing tactics whilst sipping an Aussie Shiraz. And as we all now know red wine in small quantities actually improves heart health and can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

“OK then point made. But can you tell me the drinks sponsor of the current England cricket team then?” “ OK game to you Mr C!” I replied.

P.S. – the conversation with Oz Clarke was entirely fictitious. He earnt school colours for cricket several years running and still bowls a mean off cutter.

KNOW THE ~~ROOLS~~ LAWS

CLCC has a long line of experienced umpires plying their trade either within the club or on the league circuit. Former Sat 2’s captain Matti Watton has ordered his white stick and Labrador and will soon be joining these ranks. Over summer he will cover some of the aspects of the game that we think we know what we are talking about but in fact don’t.

Fielders on the Move

I was batting (badly) in a TVL game in 2006, and as the bowler ran in, the mid- wicket fielder started to jog towards square leg. I pulled away, the bowler stopped and shouted angrily “what’s all that about?”. I told him that the fielder was moving sideways, and that he couldn’t do that. The fielder heard this and told me “I can do what I like pal”.

He was wrong. Firstly, I didn’t really regard him as much of a pal, and secondly after the bowler has started his run-up, fielders in the outfield can only move towards the batsman. This is based on the striker having the right to know where the fielders are likely to be when the bowler delivers the ball.

Fielders cannot move ‘significantly’ off the line towards the batsman, so it’s not a case of getting your ruler out and drawing a perfect line up to his big toe. But the law stops fielders moving sidewards as my pal was doing, and (one I used to do on occasions before I actually read the laws), edging or sprinting backwards hoping the batsman doesn’t realise you’re on the boundary. That said, if you stay where you are that’s OK, as there’s no obligation to walk in, something lots of CLCC fielders take fairly literally.

What about close fielders? They too are not allowed to make any significant movement after the bowler has started his run up, which is basically interpreted as anything more than minor adjustments to their stance. This is especially important if they are casting a shadow over the pitch. Some batsmen protest if there’s a fielder’s shadow on the pitch at all, but there’s no law that says this is unfair in itself.

A new, but hopefully, regular feature showing CLCC in action. This could be a bit restricted to games I play in; photos from other games welcome. This months game is the May Day Bank Holiday Monday Game vs Antelopians at Whitton. The Antelopians scored 152ao batting first which C+L knocked off comfortably for 2 wickets. THAMES VALLEY LEAGUE

How does it work?

How many games do we play a year?

For most teams 18; each team is in a division of 10 and plays every other team home and away. Our 5’s, being in the bottom division, can play an irregular number of games.

How long are the games

Each game is 100 overs long. The team batting first can bat up to 52 overs. The team batting second get the rest; therefore if you are bowled out or declare after 30 overs the opposition will get 70.

…and if it rains?

If it rains then the game is reduced. This can only happen in the first innings of the game. For every 3 ½ mins lost an over is taken off the total for the game (i.e. reduced from the original length of 100 overs). The limit for the team batting first must reduce so that they will always receive 4 overs more than the team batting second (assuming they are not bowled out/declared). The minimum length for a game is 70- overs. For example if the start is delayed by 28 minutes then the whole game is then reduced by 8 overs (28 / 3.5) to a 92 over game. The batting first can bat up to 48 with the team batting second getting the rest.

How can we earn points

To encourage an intellectual challenge on a Saturday afternoon the TVL have devised a complicated points system. The good news is if you win you get either 25 points if you bat first or 20 points if you bat second. To win batting first then you need to bowl the opposition out in the second innings.

If the game is a draw or you lose then you only get bonus points for batting or bowling.

A team will get a batting point for reaching each of the following targets: 100 runs, 125, 150, 175 and 200. If batting first these points are doubled.

Bowling points are awarded for taking 2 wickets, 4, 6, 8 and then the 5^th bowling point is awarded for taking 10 wickets in the first inning or 9 in the second. Bowling points are not doubled.

If the game is rained off the 7 points are awarded or the number of bonus points achieved if that is greater.

How does the league work?

The Thames Valley League has an ‘open’ structure. This means that all teams from the club play in the same league pyramid. To stop two teams from the same club appearing in the same division parallel divisions operate; i.e. division 2a and division 2b – there is no theoretical difference in standard between the two divisions on the same level (i.e. 2a and 2b)

How many teams get promoted?

Two teams are promoted from each division (except the 1^st XI div where only 1 team is promoted). In theory two team are relegated from each division but this could be more or less depending on how many sides are relegated into the TVL from the Home Counties League.

Jack of all trades and master of none! Bowl a bit of away swing fodder and have batted everywhere from 1 to 11 for CLCC! Redders normally posts me in the deep because I throw like a girl and I have been known to keep wicket.

What is your earliest cricketing memory?

Watching my Dad play club cricket as a toddler

Can you remember your first game for CLCC?

It was for the 4s at Aldershot under Fedex's leadership. We restricted them to just over 200 on a hot day and then had them in our sights and then collapsed to a leg spinner! I left a straight one and Ed Cambray top-scored! It was the first time I'd met such characters as Aggett, John Carr, Steve Van Eeden and the redoubtable Fadden!

Favourite ground played on?

Either Ellesmere College in Shropshire (really fast track in a Beautiful setting) or Groots Drakenstein near Cape Town (the oldest ground in

Africa and nestled in the mountains).

I finally arrived at CLCC in 2004

Most memorable game?

There are 2 that stick out for different reasons. The first was a 4s game against Datchet at Windsor. If we won we had a good chance of going up as champions and if they won they would definitely go up as champions. I lost the toss and we bowled first on a hot day with Fadden behind the stumps. They made about 245 and we chased well with Jay Dhillon getting 90-odd but wickets steadily fell and we were left needing about 20 from 4 overs with one wicket left and made it off the last ball. The second would have to be when the 2s were promoted at Stoke Green. The 4s had sealed promotion earlier on with an easy win at Eversley so we drove over to Stoke Green to see if the 2s could get their much needed win. It didn't look good until Trevor and Stocksy joined for a memorable last stand with Stocksy hitting a 6 in the last over to win it! I then vaguely remember a lot of juggs in the George afterwards - JSJ had his head buried in most of them!

Most memorable innings or bowling performance?

Would have to be 142 not out, in Melbourne, after a big drinking session the night before, 41C temperatures, followed by 36 hours in hospital on a drip!!

6-58 for Oswestry 4s, it included a hatrick and won the game. Afterwards, they made me down 2 pints - one for the 5-fer and won for the hatrick - I was only 11 years old!!

Also Plotzy's 17-2-28-7 and 60 not out against Cove for the 4s.

Post game - curry or club?

There are 2 acceptable combinations and may I throw in a third variable

- the Redback. So it can go;

What would you like to see changed in......

..... CLCC?

Easier said than done - but a better wicket at Chiswick House for the 3s and 4s to play on.

.....club cricket?

A Twenty:20 club competition - reduce the division by 2 clubs, create 4 spare saturdays. The first 3 being a league format followed by a finals day.

.....world cricket?

Divisional rather than county championship in England with more emphasis on good quality club cricket for emerging players. Also that the cricketing authorities do not create an either or situation between ICC international cricket and the IPL.

Thank you for the feedback Mo. It is a new site and the required captains first need to register as members and than be provided with admin rights to make the changes. This process can take time so pls be patient. Once the administrators are put in place the results will get updated a lot quicker. cheers

At home page select Membership from menu at the top

Then select new membership registration

Enter your details

Contact webmaster@chiswickandlatymer.org or webmaster2@chiswiclandlatymer.org to request that you are given the rights to edit fixtures etc.

Once the admin rights have been setup login via the home page

Select Manage Fixtures

Select the team, season etc

Edit the fixture you want to enter the results for

Select edit scorecard (you can also select the team

Edit scorecard as with previous site and then save
